Juvenile Fire Setting on the rise in Forest Grove
Incidents of youths misusing fire are on the rise in Forest Grove.  Parents, please take the time to talk to your
children about the dangers of “playing with fire”, as well as make an effort to check out your own home and ensure
that the opportunity to misuse fire doesn’t present itself.

Ensure that all matches, lighters, and other heat producing devices are hidden in a secure location where your
children won’t find or be able to access them.  In almost every recent instance the children found the matches or
lighters in the family home.  Often times the parents admitted that they had left a cigarette lighter or book of matches
out and the child seized the opportunity to take and misuse them.  Tell your children never to pick up matches or
lighters instead if they find them, they should have an adult go and get them.

Talk to your kids about how matches and lighters are tools and not toys.  Set clear rules for what children can and
cannot play with around the home.  Also talk to your child about what they should do if they are with a friend who is
playing with fire.  It is important for your child to know that they are not a “tattle tail” and that they are just as
responsible if their friends start a fire.

Install smoke alarms on each floor of the home and near the sleeping areas.  Ensure that all smoke alarms are less
then 10 years old and are tested monthly.  While testing your smoke alarm practice a home fire escape with the
entire family where everyone demonstrates two ways out of the home and meets at the family meeting place.

If you believe your child has been involved in misusing fire please contact our Fire Prevention Office at
503.992.3240 and talk with or schedule a meeting with one of our Juvenile Firesetter Intervention Specialists.  Our
program is based on the State of Oregon Program that has been proven time and time successful in reducing the
reoccurrence of the child starting another fire.
