Firefighters prepare to once again compete in the
Scott Firefighter Stair Climb
Department News Related Items
On Sunday March 8th, 2009 Firefighters from Forest Grove will once again make their way to Seattle for the 18th annual
Scott Firefighter Stair Climb.

The event which has been held annually for the last 18 years in Seattle at the Columbia Tower (formerly Bank of America
Tower) has drawn firefighter from all over the world to compete.  This year marks the 5th year that members from the
department have made the journey to compete in this event.  The event, which is a fund raiser for The Leukemia &
Lymphoma Society has helped raise money for blood cancer research and patient services.  This unique event is the largest
individual firefighter competition in the world.

The Columbia Tower, which stands 788 feet overlooking downtown Seattle, is the second tallest building west of the
Mississippi.  Firefighters competing in this event will climb a total of 69 floors or 1,311 steps wearing 60 pounds of protective
equipment, the same equipment that we use when fighting fires.

In years past members of the fire department competed in this event as part of the team from the Tualitin Valley Firefighters
Union local 1660.  This year will be the second year in which Forest Grove Fire & Rescue has it's own team competing in this
event.

Last year, our team placed 84th out of 156 teams.  There were over 1,300 firefighters competing in this event, and this year is
rumored to be even larger.

An estimated 894,543 Americans are currently living with leukemia, Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma, myeloma and
myelodysplastic syndromes.

It was estimated that 138,530 people in the United States were diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma in 2008.
These new cases of leukemia, Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma account for 9.6 percent of the 1,437,180
new cancer cases diagnosed in the United States this year.

Leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma will cause the deaths of an estimated 52,910 people in the United States this year.

Every ten minutes, another child or adult is expected to die from leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma. This statistic represents
nearly 145 people each day, or six people every hour.

Leukemia causes more deaths than any other cancer among children and young adults under the age of 20.

Why do we do this you might ask?

Not only are firefighters extremely competitive, but it is in our nature to help others.

Not only is this event a race, but it's main purpose is as a fund raiser.  The link below will allow you to donate online for those
who wish to do so in helping our cause.

Last year our team raised $1,250 for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.  This year with your help we hope to surpass that
amount.
